What is Black Cohosh

Black cohosh, latin name Cimicifuga racemosa is a perennial plant and a member of the buttercup family. Originating from North America, it is also known sometimes as black snakeroot bugwort, bugbane,rattleweed, rattleroot,  rattletop, or macrotys,   It grows up to a height of 8 feet with white flowers, It is the root however that is used in herbal medicine.

What can Black Cohosh do for me

Originally sold in the US, Black Cohosh has natural properties that are used to treat the nasty side effects of the menopause, mainly hot flushes or night sweats, insomnia and mood swings. Used as a preferable replacement for the oestrogen based HRT treatments it can offer terrific relief from these symptoms without the now know associated risks of certain cancers and heart problems

Black Cohosh usually has few or no side effects. a few women suffer from mild short term stomach aches but these are rare and have always been very short lived.

When compared in trials to regular HRT therapies the use of Black Cohosh recorded far less adverse reactions. As with all vitamin and herbal supplements this product may not be suitable to taken by pregnant women, or ones that are breastfeeding. In fact it’s best to always consult your GP before taking any supplements if you have any underlying medical conditions or are taking long term medication.

To summarise, Black Cohosh is a wonderful treatment for those hot flushes and works well for the majority of women without causing much in the way of side effects.
